HIGHLIGHTS

By the end of 2001, KASH was fully recognized on a national level. While maintaining this momentum, the main focus of 2002 moved to regionalism of KASH’s activities. This objective was successfully completed.
On January 8, 2002, KASH started an initiative to assist the North East population blocked by cold weather and heavy snow. Private sector companies and other donors gave commodities for the needy populations, worth more than $100.000.

KASH actively had its voice heard in country policy formulation by: (1) participating in the preparation of six Free Trade Agreements with neighbor countries; (2) preparing several position papers and lobbing for seven fiscal laws, as well as agribusiness development issues in each KASH region.
KASH participated in different donor activities and meetings, including a meeting with Vice President of World Bank. On November 1, KASH held its National Conference, in collaboration with the Agricultural University of Tirana. Around 200 association board members and invitees were participants of this event. This Conference identified the need for changes in the KASH’s bylaws with the purpose of accepting regional chairmen as members of the National Board.

Channeling advocacy through media was another of KASH’s achievements for 2002. Several TV reporters visited KASH office to make known its position on different agricultural policy issues. Leaders of the organization were invited to participate in live TV debates. Most well-known newspapers presented KASH’s positions for important policy issues.
Partnership with sister organizations of neighboring countries, as a facet of KASH’s strategy, was made concrete through discussions of AKA (Alliance of Kosova Agribusiness) and KASH joint committee in Pristine. The focus of these discussions was the removal of trade barriers between Kosova and Albania and improvement of the road Durres-Morina.

On December 17, 2002, KASH and AGRIDEV (Agricultural Development Company) signed a Memorandum of Understanding, with the purpose of further increasing the future cooperation between the two parties.

KASH organized a media awareness campaign to convince the Albanian Government not to allow wheat flour coming from Serbia and Montenegro to Albania without customs duties. Several papers were written in main Albanian newspapers. KASH representatives were invited to participate in live TV debates. Letters were sent to the Minister of Agriculture and Food and Minister of Economy. As a result, the Free Trade Agreement with Serbia and Montenegro is being re-negotiated. While the FTA with Serbia and Montenegro is technically completed, there is still the debated issue of flour as a commodity in a market not fully liberalized.
